ABOUT
Michael O. is a singer, songwriter, producer, and performer who draws from his personal experiences and rich cultural background to create a powerful sound that is uniquely his own.
Born in New York City and raised in Portland, Maine, Michael's upbringing blended American, African American, and Nigerian influences, shaping the multifaceted artist he is today.
Michael graduated from Dartmouth College, where he earned dual degrees in Global Health and History. During his time there, he joined the acclaimed a cappella group, The Dartmouth Aires, helping lead them to a second-place finish on NBC's The Sing-Off. With more than 6.5 million weekly viewers, Michael captivated audiences nationwide and earned praise from celebrity judges, including Ben Folds, who described him as "incredible" and "timeless," and Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men, who called him "a freaking superstar."
Following graduation, Michael relocated to Los Angeles and released his debut EP, In the Beginning, in 2013. Within 24 hours of its release, the project climbed into the Top 5 of the iTunes R&B charts and remained the best-selling EP in Northern New England throughout the year.
In 2015, Michael appeared in the major motion picture Pitch Perfect 2 as the lead vocalist of the fictional group The Singboks, performing the song "Anywhere You Want It." He was also featured on the film's soundtrack, which earned the American Music Award for Favorite Soundtrack. Both the film and soundtrack reached the No. 1 spot upon release.
Michael has collaborated with acclaimed artists and producers including Flex Cop (One Love Records), Option4 (Nurvous Records), and Gladiator (Fool's Gold Records), lending his distinctive vocals to a variety of internationally recognized tracks.
His live performances have taken him across the globe, including sold-out appearances at Merrill Auditorium, Lincoln Center, Caesars Palace, and a performance for President Barack Obama at the White House.
Through his music, Michael seeks to build connections that transcend ethnic, geographic, and cultural boundaries. His work explores themes of identity, heritage, and shared human experiences. Inspired by artists who continuously evolve, Michael strives to create meaningful entertainment that brings people together through music. A dynamic performer with a global perspective, he believes that "we are far more alike than we are different."
After taking a brief hiatus from music to build and develop NKENNE, a successful African language-learning platform, Michael returned to the spotlight in 2025 with his breakout single "Careless Whispers," an Afrobeat-inspired reimagining of the George Michael classic. The track quickly resonated with listeners, surpassing 2 million streams on Spotify.
Building on that momentum, Michael released his critically acclaimed EP Lagos 2 London in 2025. The project showcased his signature blend of Afrobeats, R&B, and global influences, featuring standout tracks including "Unconditional," "Bang Bang," and "Scru." The EP further established Michael O. as one of the most exciting emerging voices bridging African and Western contemporary music.
